We are really pleased to share the news that planning permission has been granted for the £1.3m programme of works to commence at Newfield Green.
This means that work can now begin to build a pioneering community mental health centre which will offer 24/7 mental health care to people on a drop-in basis in Gleadless and Heeley.
The new centre will be in the same building as the Terry Wright Community Hall and the Newfield Green Library. As well as an extension for hospitality beds, the community hall will also be redecorated with a new kitchen, appliances, toilets, storage, dimmable lighting, a bifold soundproof divide, new windows, flooring, CCTV, new alarm systems and more including much needed roof repairs.
The library will also benefit from the same roof repairs, as well as a total redecoration and new windows and window dressings, meaning the space will be fit for community use now and for many years to come.
The plans have been jointly developed by a number of partners in Sheffield from the NHS, council and voluntary sector, as well as with the local community who use the site every day, and existing service users.
Building work will start next week from Monday 22 September 2025 and we plan to open the new centre in February 2026.
The Gleadless and Heeley Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre is one of six pilots across England. It’s testing new ways of providing mental health services in the community. It aims to make it easier for people to get help close to home. The pilot uses ideas from other countries to create a better system for mental health care.
Below are some visuals showing what the building will look inside like when it’s finished. Note that the colours will change; community groups and the SHSC estates team will be working together to develop the interior design and colour schemes between now and December 2025.
These are impressions to give an idea of size and space. The colours, lighting and decor are not decided as yet.
